Coffee Anyone? – A Ghost Story
Three years ago in March of 2006, my wife and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary by spending a week in the city where we honeymooned – Santa Fe, NM! A dear friend of mine had a vacation home there. During most of the year, they leased it out through a management company so many visitors were able to experience the warm, rustic beauty of this fabulous home mere minutes from the Plaza in Santa Fe.
The home was amazing – adobe structure; five kiva fireplaces throughout; the main house was three bedrooms and three baths while the guest house (connected to the main house via one door) was two bedrooms two baths with living/dining/kitchen combination. Tile and wood floors throughout – simply amazing! The outdoor enclosed patio could be accessed from four different doorways and had two outdoor fireplaces and a hot tub. We had access to the entire home for the week!
We arrived on a Monday afternoon and commenced our enjoyment of the home and the city. On our second night there – Tuesday – we went to bed snuggled beneath the down comforter, warmed by the glowing embers of a fading fire in the fireplace. At around 2:00 am, I was awakened by an overwhelming smell of coffee – as if someone had opened a fresh can and put it under my nose. I immediately got up thinking that I might have left the coffee pot on. I fully anticipated the aroma to increase the closer I got to the kitchen; however, the opposite was true. The further away from the bedroom I walked, the more the aroma diminished. When I arrived in the kitchen, no aroma of coffee at all!
Confused, I turned back toward the hall leading to the bedroom and as I entered the bedroom, was overwhelmed by the same smell of coffee that had awakened me only moments prior. I quietly explored the room and found nothing that could explain the coffee aroma. I sat on the edge of the bed and chalked the experience up to a an unexplainable curiosity, then went back to sleep.
The next morning, I emailed my friend and laughingly mentioned that they must have a ghost in the house and relayed the story. Within two minutes, I received a return email telling me that I must not mention my experience to his wife because she was convinced they had a ghost in the house. Well, I didn’t need to mention it to her because he did! Later that day, the representative from the management company came by and said, “Well, I hear you’ve had an encounter with our ghost!” That was all I needed. I sat her down and asked for a full history of the ghost in that beautiful home.
She shared that many guests had reported strange events while staying in the home. Footsteps in various parts of the house; sounds similar to the dragging of something heavy across the floor; lights flickering from time to time; and even one story of a ghost getting in the car with one of the maids as she left the house – a tall Native American warrior. I was intrigued!
Each night from that Tuesday through Friday, around 2:00 am, either my wife or I were awakened by some small event. On Thursday night, she was awakened by the sound of heavy footsteps in another part of the house. She heard them for about ten minutes. We never felt threatened or scared – just “visited.”
After returning home, I corresponded with my friend’s wife about her experiences and we compared notes from other guests as well.
Over a period of a year, I would periodically get “impressions” about the house while either running or in dreams – how many entities were actually there; rooms of significance in the house; possible clues to be checked out on various parts of the property; partial names to research; historical time periods of significance to research; etc. We would share about those impressions and were on the trail to solve the mystery.
About a year after our visit, my friends decided to have the ghost or ghosts removed from the home. They contacted a person in Santa Fe who claimed to be able to accomplish this task and went through the procedure. Not long after that, I stopped receiving my “impressions,” other guests ceased sharing stories of strange encounters, the cleaning crews stopped feeling “watched” and my friends were convinced all entities had departed.
Just before the ritual was performed, I had a final dream in which I saw the faint outline of a tall Native American warrior standing in the entryway to the main kitchen. The expression on his face was one of satisfaction and contentment – as if he had completed a task. I sensed that he was pleased with himself and that he had accomplished his assignment – whatever it was.
All-in-all, I felt that there were actually four entities in the home – one cruel spirit, a man of Spanish origin; a young woman; a young man; and the Native American. I even consulted with a psychic about the experiences related to the house and we both concluded that the man likely had a hand in the demise of the young woman although we were unsure of the nature of the relationship.
I was completely fascinated by the series of experiences initiated by my unspoken question of, “Coffee anyone?” I’ve not had any further impressions, dreams or thoughts related to the house since the cleansing ceremony. Not long after the ceremony, they sold the property because they got “an offer they couldn’t refuse!” Alas, I will never be able to return and conduct my own investigation. Oh well! Another day, another ghost!
